Sanctions on Russia upheld: CAS court

The International Sports Court (CAS) has upheld UEFA's ban on Russian football. The decision was announced in a verdict given by CAS on Tuesday. The sanctions were imposed in the wake of Russia's aggression in Ukraine.

FIFA and UEFA have banned all Russian clubs and national teams from all competitions until further notice on February 26.

As a result of the ban, Russia's men's team was knocked out of the Qatar World Cup qualifiers and the girls' team was eliminated from the 2022 European Championship.

The Russian Football Union (RFU) said in a statement on its website on March 3 that it would appeal the ban to the CAS and demand compensation against the two organizations.

Note that this CAS ruling will only apply to UEFA competitions. Russia is still trying to lift FIFA's ban to qualify for the playoffs later this month.

After the announcement of Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, Russian forces launched an attack on Ukraine. Since then, various bans have been imposed on Russian sports.
